Some facts to help you out:
- Beef is by *far* the most environmentally detrimental of animal protein products (considering impact on land use changes, nutrient effiency, water consumption, etc.)
- Shipping, in general, is a small (< 10%) fraction of the carbon footprint of foods.  For certain things (fruit & vegetables flown in pre-packaged) it's substantial; for meat, the raising is dominant, and for processed foods the processing is dominant.  Truck, and especially rail, shipping is remarkably efficient.
- Market signals trump arguments about "wasting" meat that's "already dead".  IMO -- that's not a fact. :-)
- weight-per-weight, cheese has roughly the same environmental impact as beef.  Thankfully, we seldom eat a quarter-pounder of cheese. :-)
- Chicken, eggs, and tilapia (a fish) are the most reasonable things to eat in terms of nutrient inefficiency.
- Meaty protein is not as healthy as you think; e.g. http://www.ted.com/talks/view/id/263

Þetta er dilemma! Ég skrifaði þetta fyrir stúdentablaðið einu sinni, veit ekki hvort þú manst eftir því :) http://unnur.klaki.net/mind/entry/1075859607.html Lýsingin er ýkt en þó byggð á sannsögulegum aðstæðum Unnar Maríu í verslunarleiðangri.

Þú ert viss um að kjúklingurinn hafi kvalist í uppeldinu? Ég veit til dæmis fyrir víst að hér heima eru kjúklingar aldir upp í risaskemmum þar sem þeir hoppa um til þess að gera frjálsir, í þessa 6 mánuði sem þeir eru að alast upp. Hins vegar er aflífunaraðferðin ekkert endilega kvalalaus, basicly settir í rafmagnsstólinn :|

If you want to consider the total suffering of the meat you eat, it takes a lot of 6 month old chickens to add up to the meat in one 2-3year old cow.
In fact, you could just buy a single whale, freeze it and eat it for the rest of your life. You will never need to worry about the suffering of the animals you eat again...

-- which is pretty much what I do. How possible is that in Dublin? Here in the San Francisco bay area, it's dead easy; but I do recognize that I'm spoiled ...
